If you could only choose one room in your home to put your heart and soul into designing, the living room would top the list. It’s that treasured (and often off-limits) space that sets the tone for your entire decorating style.
To add some finishing touches to your family room walls decorate with wall mirrors. They bring you both style and function and will add a warmth and beauty to the room. They can make small spaces appear larger and add a brilliance that brightens up the entire room. They are available in many sizes, styles, finishes and materials. With innovative hanging options and frames of all kinds your choices are unlimited. There are mirrors to match anyone's budget and décor. They start under one hundred dollars and you can find mirrors in leather to metal finishes that will match your furniture and accessories. Flexible lighting is a necessity in a room as multi-functional as the family room is. Most call for a combination of over head wall and table lighting. Lighting will help create the mood you are after. Especially popular for home theatres are wall sconces that provide soft and glowing light. Wall sconces combined with black ceiling tile can resemble the night sky.
All changes in the family room should be in line with the needs of all family members. So, you should generally choose the bigger room to include most activities like books and reading table, TV & entertainment system, a place for the PC and an area for babies or kids toys. Storage is a very important point for family rooms to make space. Modern decoration ideas include walls with spaces to place the home theatre system and book shelves with a retractable table for readers. If you're going to remodel your home soon, then you should consider a family room addition as part of your remodeling project. If you're family is anything like many others around the country, then you're no stranger to everyone being on the move at all times. The parents might have work and meetings. The kids have sports practice, music lessons and other obligations outside of school. It seems like everyone always has somewhere that they have to be.
Accents and Accessories Plants make any room more attractive, and the den is no exception. Use greenery to decorate the room, and consider several light sources for the ones who love to read. A floor lamp placed beside a chair makes the perfect place to cozy up and read a book. Table lamps on each end of the sofa further enhance the cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Overhead light should be avoided as it can be harsh and glaring. For the walls, decorate with pictures and prints that reflect your own tastes and personality.
But don't get too wrapped up in trying to make your television or media center the focal point in your family room. It isn't really necessary. Really, almost everyone has a television now, so why make it your focal point when it really isn't a special piece? It isn't the focal point in my family room. I just prefer to have a nice ornate mirror or large framed photos above my couch, with decorative candle sconces on each side. Having decorative lamps on end tables that are on each side of the couch help pull together the focal point. Large figures or statues, or large vases with artificial floral or bamboo stems can be used at one end of your sofa instead of having lamps at each end. Whatever style or color scheme you use to decorate your family room, be sure to keep it comfortable. I wouldn't recommend formal style furniture in your family room since it is a gathering room where people want to relax. And remember, in a room where many gather, there are more spots and stains. Choose furniture with upholstry that is stain resistant or with covers that are easy to remove and wash. Upholstry with dark colors or having leather furniture are great choices for a family room. Adding ottomans or foot rests are also nice pieces to prop your feet up, and they provide extra seating when you
Where an addition is placed on a house will vary depending on the layout of the home and actual site conditions. If there is space on the site that allows for a family room addition on the main level of a home, I often look for a location near the kitchen. If there is no space on the site for a ground level addition, we'll either look at a location such as in an unfinished basement, or consider adding onto a second story. One recent trend we are finding is locating a family space adjacent to bedrooms, especially if the space is located adjacent to kid's bedrooms. This family room space often becomes the kid's 'hang out space'.
