But don't get too wrapped up in trying to make your television or media center the focal point in your family room. It isn't really necessary. Really, almost everyone has a television now, so why make it your focal point when it really isn't a special piece? It isn't the focal point in my family room. I just prefer to have a nice ornate mirror or large framed photos above my couch, with decorative candle sconces on each side. Having decorative lamps on end tables that are on each side of the couch help pull together the focal point. Large figures or statues, or large vases with artificial floral or bamboo stems can be used at one end of your sofa instead of having lamps at each end. Whatever style or color scheme you use to decorate your family room, be sure to keep it comfortable. I wouldn't recommend formal style furniture in your family room since it is a gathering room where people want to relax. And remember, in a room where many gather, there are more spots and stains. Choose furniture with upholstry that is stain resistant or with covers that are easy to remove and wash. Upholstry with dark colors or having leather furniture are great choices for a family room. Adding ottomans or foot rests are also nice pieces to prop your feet up, and they provide extra seating when you
Rather than buying expensive furniture and décor that match, look for diverse pieces with a unifying theme, color and style for the family room. A popular trend is cushions that don't precisely match the couch. You can use the basic couch, but have slipcovers custom made for the cushions and replace them. You can always use the original covers later, always use a vibrant and exciting shade in fabrics.
Often a family room plays many roles, so it's important to design the space to allow for the functions you need. Here are some things to consider: 1. While it's nice to have a separate media room, often the space or funds are not available for this luxury. Consider designing the family room to accommodate movie night by incorporating room darkening black-out shades and the necessary electronic equipment and speakers. 2. If you often need a place for extra guests to sleep, a family room can be converted easily to a sleeping area if you incorporate the right furniture. A queen size sleeper sofa can comfortably sleep two (look for ones with an inflatable mattress topper for additional comfort. Also standard size sheets will fit better since the mattresses are as thick as a conventional ones). If additional sleeping space, or individual beds are desired for activities like kid's sleepovers, then look for furniture such as ottomans and chairs that fold out to single beds. If you have the space, you may also be able to incorporate a day bed. For additional sleeping, look for a day bed with a trundle below (these are also great for kid's bedrooms for a friend who sleeps over). 3. One of the complaints we frequently hear about homes is that the dining room is too small for big family get togethers. But when asked how often people entertain large groups, it is often only once or twice a year. A family room addition can help solve this problem if space is designed in for a large expanding table. 4. A large table is also useful in a family room because inevitably kids will end up doing their homework where the family gathers. A large table is a perfect multipurpose addition to the family room. To save space, it can even be placed with an end against a wall surface, and pulled out when additional seating is needed.
A simple change in furniture arrangement gives any room a new look. If you can change the traffic flow of the room you'll find it has a different feel altogether. If there are multiple focal points in your room change focus to from the old point to a new one.
Think about things like board games, music instruments, televisions, video game systems and other accessories that everyone in the family uses for entertainment. If you have a family room, you can take all of those things and put them in one place, freeing up space in the other rooms where they were before.A family room can also serve as a hub between frequently traveled rooms like the kitchen, the balcony outside, the basement and any other area that is family members and guests visit often. Using your family room addition for ease of access between rooms is just another advantage that you and your family can get from making this part of your home improvement project, but the benefits don't end there. Since adding a room is an easy job for many contractors, the sizes that family rooms come in are designed to fit into virtually any homeowner's budget. Whether you're a new family with only one child, or a large family with many children, a family room can be scaled to meet your specific needs as far as size and amenities are concerned. Perhaps the biggest benefit that many homeowners don't realize comes with a family room addition, however, is that, like many home improvement projects, it can do a lot to add to a home's value.
have a lot of people filling the room. Decorating a family room is very easy. Framed family photos add a nice touch and are great conversation starters when you have guests visiting. Also, neatly placing books on your coffee or end tables will provide reading material when you want to turn the television off, and have a quiet place for reading. And, add a few throws or afghans, not only to add color, but to warm up and relax while watching a movie or reading a good book! And, if you decide to serve food in your family area, having snack tables or serving trays with stands will not only keep the food off of your nice furniture, but are very easy to clean up. And most of these trays with stands can be folded and conveniently stored away. Using these ideas will create a family room designed for a large group of people to entertain, for a few to gather and have conversation, or for one just to kick back and relax with a good book. Whatever the purpose, make it a multi functional space that is comfortable and includes your own personal style!
