Furniture. Every den should have a sofa, bookshelves and a couple of chairs with ottomans. If you or someone in your family is a voracious reader, consider floor to ceiling bookshelves flanking both sides of a fireplace. Your television may be kept in an armoire, so that when you are not watching it can be hidden from view. You may want to consider an entertainment center or office set-up in one corner if your family often plays games, listens to music or uses the computer.
Are you ready? It’s before and after time! I could not be more excited to share this Family Room redesign with you. I worked with Room & Board to transform the space and I am absolutely joyful about how it turned out. The room is full of light and color. It’s comfortable and inviting. It’s practical and useful. And now we spend at least 70% more time in the room than we used to. Not joking. And more on that in a bit.
Often a family room plays many roles, so it's important to design the space to allow for the functions you need. Here are some things to consider: 1. While it's nice to have a separate media room, often the space or funds are not available for this luxury. Consider designing the family room to accommodate movie night by incorporating room darkening black-out shades and the necessary electronic equipment and speakers. 2. If you often need a place for extra guests to sleep, a family room can be converted easily to a sleeping area if you incorporate the right furniture. A queen size sleeper sofa can comfortably sleep two (look for ones with an inflatable mattress topper for additional comfort. Also standard size sheets will fit better since the mattresses are as thick as a conventional ones). If additional sleeping space, or individual beds are desired for activities like kid's sleepovers, then look for furniture such as ottomans and chairs that fold out to single beds. If you have the space, you may also be able to incorporate a day bed. For additional sleeping, look for a day bed with a trundle below (these are also great for kid's bedrooms for a friend who sleeps over). 3. One of the complaints we frequently hear about homes is that the dining room is too small for big family get togethers. But when asked how often people entertain large groups, it is often only once or twice a year. A family room addition can help solve this problem if space is designed in for a large expanding table. 4. A large table is also useful in a family room because inevitably kids will end up doing their homework where the family gathers. A large table is a perfect multipurpose addition to the family room. To save space, it can even be placed with an end against a wall surface, and pulled out when additional seating is needed.
Color Choices and Window Treatments. Since this room is to be used mostly by family, the colors you choose should be those you love. If you like light, neutral colors, by all means go for it! You may prefer darker hues, such as rich burgundies or deep blues. These are fine too - just remember, darker colors will make the room appear smaller. As far as windows go, you can use any type of blinds, shades, drapes or curtains you like. If you want the room to appear light and airy, go for mini-blinds or shades in light, neutral colors that can be drawn up when you like. If you prefer a more private room, heavier drapes or boldly patterned curtains are good choices. You may even want to consider wood shutters that can be pushed back when you like. Light walls look great with darker upholstery and leather. Any tones that complement or contrast each other will further add depth and interest to the room. Just remember, this room is specially made for you and your family to enjoy, so make it your own! Use all of the colors, fabrics, and accessories that are your favorites to make it a room in which you will truly enjoy relaxing after a hard day's work.
Splashes of color can also transform your room and pull it neatly together. It's okay to throw bright colors in a family room. The combinations of blue and green, orange and red, are strong bold colors that will be sure to bring a smile to your face. Reds and oranges are energetic colors while the blues and greens will be more calming.
Accents and Accessories Plants make any room more attractive, and the den is no exception. Use greenery to decorate the room, and consider several light sources for the ones who love to read. A floor lamp placed beside a chair makes the perfect place to cozy up and read a book. Table lamps on each end of the sofa further enhance the cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Overhead light should be avoided as it can be harsh and glaring. For the walls, decorate with pictures and prints that reflect your own tastes and personality.
